Problems Caused by Hard Water

Hard water has a way of making its presence known. You might see those cloudy white spots on your faucets, showerheads, or glass doors that keep coming back no matter how often you clean. That same stubborn buildup is happening inside your pipes and appliances, too, even though you can't see it.

Over time, this hidden scale can cause real problems. Your water heater, dishwasher, and washing machine must work harder to perform the same tasks, which can lead to higher energy bills and more wear and tear. Eventually, scale can even clog your pipes and lower your water pressure.

It doesn’t stop there. Hard water makes it challenging for soaps and detergents to do their job. You might notice your skin feels dry after a shower, your hair looks a little dull, or your clothes come out of the wash feeling stiff. And because soap reacts with the minerals in hard water, you often end up using more just to get things clean.

If any of this sounds familiar, you're not alone. Want help exploring ways to deal with hard water in your home? Contact our team! We can help.

How Water Softeners Work

Whole-house water softeners are surprisingly simple and effective devices installed directly into your main water line, typically in your garage or near your water heater. As water flows into your home from the municipal supply, it passes through a tank filled with small, plastic resin beads.

These beads are charged with sodium ions. Through a process called ion exchange, the resin beads attract and hold onto the hard water minerals (calcium and magnesium) and, in exchange, release sodium ions into the water. This process effectively removes hardness from water.

The result is softened water flowing to every tap and appliance in your home. The system periodically cleans, or regenerates, the resin beads by flushing them with a brine solution from a separate salt tank. This process washes collected minerals down the drain and recharges beads with sodium ions, preparing the system to soften more water.
